Delete a Quiz, Dropbox or Discussion Item From the Gradebook

Overview

Gradebook items that are associated with a dropbox, quiz, or discussion cannot be deleted from the grade book until the instructor has "unassociated" the assignment from the grade book.

Instructions

Confirm the name of the lesson item that is associated with the item you want to delete.

  1. Navigate to the grade book and select the Manage Grades Tab.
  2. Locate the assignment and hover your cursor over the question mark icon in the Association column for the item you want to delete. The Tool Tip will display the association information for the lesson item, such as for the Syllabus Quiz or Introduction Discussion, shown in Figure 1 below.

Mouse over the question mark icon to see what assignment is associated with this grade item.

  1. Navigate to Dropbox, Quizzes/Exams, or Discussions and locate the associated dropbox, quiz, or discussion. Confirm that you have found the right one by mousing over the key icon Gradebook Key Icon to display the name of the gradebook item associated with this assignment.
  2. Edit the assignment and then select the "Save and Close" button to save your changes for the item.
    1. For a Dropbox, edit the folder and on the Properties Tab and select None from the Grade Item dropdown menu.
    2. For a Quiz/Exam, edit the quiz and navigate to the Assessment Tab. Then uncheck the box to "Auto Export to Grades" and select "None" from the Grade Item dropdown menu.  The item can still be graded if the box to "Allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion" is checked. However, there will be no impact on the gradebook.  Refer to Figure 2 below.
    3. For a Discussion, edit the topic and navigate to the Assessment Tab. Then select "-- Choose a grade item --" from the Grade Item dropdown menu.
  1. Having selected the "Save and Close" button to continue for either a dropbox, quiz, or discussion, return to the Manage Tab of the Gradebook to verify that the Grade Item no longer has an associated assignment in the Association column.
  2. Select the check box next to the grade item that you want to delete and choose "Delete" from the "More Actions" dropdown menu. You will then be prompted to select the item again and choose to delete it. This extra step is meant to ensure that you do not delete something you need to keep.
