Creating the Calendar Events for a P.L.A.T.O. Seating Chart

Overview

P.L.A.T.O. seating charts integrate with locations and the course calendar to help instructors track attendance, participation and performance in face-to-face classes.  The seating chart is a visual representation of your physical classroom seating arrangement and must be added before creating the recurring calendar event for your class.

Create the Recurring Calendar Event

  1. Navigate to your course calendar and select the "Create Event" button.
  2. Verify that you have chosen the correct location for your class by scrolling to the bottom of the page where you can select your classroom from the Location drop down menu, as shown below in  Figure 1.  If your location is not listed there, return to Seating Charts in the Manage Tab.
  3. Enter a title in the "Enter Event Title" box and a description in the Description Box.
  4. Use the date and time drop down boxes to select the date and time of your first day of class.
  5. Select the "Add Recurrence" button and choose the appropriate recurrence, such as "Weekly", and then the pertinent days of the week, and when the recurrence will end, as shown in  Figure 2.
  6. Check the "Use Seating Chart" button if it is not already selected.
  7. Select the "Create" button to complete the creation of your calendar event.

Seating charts can be created to track attendance and participation in a merged P.L.A.T.O. course site once a group has been created for each section.
Seating charts can be used in P.L.A.T.O. to track attendance, participation and performance in face-to-face classes.  Seating charts integrate with locations and the calendar in a course site once the seating chart is complete. Grade column(s) would need to be created and populated manually. The seating chart you choose should be a visual representation of your classroom seating arrangement.  Classroom details and photos are available to view in the ITS Knowledge Base.
Instructors can track student participation in the seating chart by clicking on the plus sign each time a student voluntarily participates or answers when called upon (cold call).
A quick way to take attendance with the Seating Chart is to first mark All Students Present for the current class.  Then change the one or two who are not present to Absent, where you can choose "Unexcused Absence" or "Excused Absence".
