Enrolling in Microsoft Authenticator with number matching for MFA For users who had previously set up SMS Text messages or Voice

This article explains how to set up Microsoft Authenticator with Number Matching for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) from a computer or your mobile device.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Enroll from a computer

1. Sign in to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info using your Penn College account.
2. Select + Add sign-in method.
3. Select Microsoft Authenticator.
4. Review the on-screen instructions and press Next until you reach the QR code.
5. On your phone, open the Microsoft Authenticator app, tap + > Work or school account > Scan a QR code, and scan the code on your computer screen.
6. Wait for the Account added successfully message in the app.
7. On the computer, press Next. (If your prompt has timed out, press Back, then repeat steps 5-6.)
8. On the Let’s try it out screen, note the two-digit number shown.
9. In the Microsoft Authenticator app, enter that number in the Are you trying to sign in? prompt and tap Yes.
10. Confirm you see the Approved banner.
11. Press Next on the remaining prompts to finish.
12. Next to "most advisable sign-in method" click "Change"
13. Select "App based authentication - notification" from the dropdown and then click confirm. 

Enroll from a mobile device

1. Sign in to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info using your Penn College Account.
2. Select + Add sign-in method.
3. Select Microsoft Authenticator.
4. Select Next.
5. Tap the Pair your account to the app by clicking this link option on the screen.
6. Wait for the Account added successfully prompt and press Ok.
7. Return to your browser and press Next.
8. On the Let’s try it out screen, note the two-digit number shown.
   • You may see a notification appear asking Are you trying to sign in?
   • When the Are you trying to sign in? notification appears, tap it to open the Microsoft Authenticator app. (If it doesn't open automatically, open the app manually.)
   • Enter the two-digit number in the prompt and tap Yes.
   • Return to the browser and press Next to finish.
9. Review the on-screen instructions and press Next until you reach the QR code.
10. On the Let’s try it out screen, note the two-digit number shown.
11. In the Microsoft Authenticator app, enter that number in the Are you trying to sign in? prompt and tap Yes.
12. Confirm you see the Approved banner.
13. Press Next on the remaining prompts to finish.
14. Next to "most advisable sign-in method" click "Change"
15. Select "App based authentication - notification" from the dropdown and then click confirm.
