Printing From Your Apple Computer

Overview

Click here to read how to use a PawPrint enabled printer from your Apple computer.

Open the System Preferences application and select Printers and Scanners. Click the ‘+’ sign and switch to advanced settings. From there select the printer type to ‘Windows printer via spools’ and do not delete the smb:\\ in the URL section.

Grab the URL to the specific printer you want and copy & paste it into the URL section. Make sure you have the necessary drivers installed from the printer manufacturer’s website.

Use the ‘Select Software’ option to find the proper driver for the printer you are trying to connect to. Once you find the proper driver, you will be able to add the printer.

Instructions

Step 1. 

Open System Preferences by clicking on the gear icon. You may also search using Spotlight, the magnifying glass in the top right corner of your screen.

Step 2.

Click on the ‘Printers & Scanners’ icon.

Step 3.

Click on the ‘Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax..’ Button, located on the Right-hand side of the list window.

Step 4.

If the Advanced Settings option is available, skip to step 5.

Access Advanced Settings by right clicking to the right of the "Windows" option. Select Properties, then drag out the Advanced Settings icon and place it next to the Windows printer icon.

**For newer macOS's to show the advanced icon, you must press control then left click on the tool bar and click customize toolbar.  Drag the advanced gear icon to the tool bar to have access to the advanced menu.

Step 5.

Click the Advanced Settings button, then select "Windows printer via spoolss"

Step 6.

Copy the URL of the printer you wish to add from the table below and paste after the "smb://" in the URL field. You can assign the printer a friendly name and location in the fields below the URL box.

Step 7.

Ensure that you have the correct driver for the printer installed. Drivers can be found on the printer manufacturer's website.

Once you download the driver, open the download, and install the driver. Continue with Step 8 once the driver has been fully installed.

Step 8.

Click on "Select software" and choose the appropriate model for your printer based on the table above.

Step 9.

Your printer is now installed! You will be prompted to log in the first time you print and whenever you change your network password. Be sure to enter your full email address (i.e. abc12@pct.edu) in the user name field and your current network password.
