Blackbaud Multi-Factor Authentication Instructions

This link will take you to Blackbaud's  “Multi-factor authentication” knowledge base page for details as to the why and how to set up this next security feature being implemented by Blackbaud starting in June 2022. You can do this authentication anytime between now and then. In the knowledge base, make sure to select the drop-down arrow on the “ Enable multi-factor authentication through a mobile authenticator app” line for full instructions. Text below.

Multi-factor authentication

While your email address and password help secure your Blackbaud ID, you can increase security with multi-factor authentication. Multi-factor authentication enables your Blackbaud ID to require a unique verification code — received on your personal device — in addition to your email address and password. You can receive verification codes:

  • As text messages on your mobile phone (standard messaging rates apply)
  • Through a mobile authenticator app. Unlike with text messages, you can receive verification codes through a mobile authenticator app when your device is off-line or has no cellular service.

With this extra layer of security, someone with your password still needs the verification code to access sensitive data and account information through your Blackbaud ID. When you enable multi-factor authentication, you receive:

  • A six-digit verification code — on your personal device — to further confirm your identity.
  • A 24-digit recovery code to use to access your account if you lose your mobile device or can't receive verification codes.

Keep in mind that individual users decide whether to turn on multi-factor authentication for their Blackbaud IDs. Admins do not control this decision. If admins need to enforce multi-factor authentication for users, they must establish a single sign-on connection with Blackbaud using an identity provider and enforce multi-factor authentication through that connection.

Enable multi-factor authentication through a mobile authenticator app

  1. If necessary, download and install a mobile authenticator app on your personal device. For more information, see the list of apps below.
  2. On your Blackbaud ID profile, select Turn on for Multi-factor authentication.
  3. Enter your password, and select Continue.
  4. Select Use mobile authenticator and Next.
  5. To confirm your Blackbaud ID, scan the quick response (QR) code or enter the code in your mobile authenticator app.
  6. Within five minutes:

    1. Enter the verification code you receive on your device.
    2. To not require a verification code on the same device and browser for 30 days, select Remember this browser.
    3. Select Next.
  7. Save the recovery code to use if you lose your mobile device, and select Done.

To quickly save your recovery code, take a picture of it with your personal device, or select copy to clipboard and paste it into a secured file.
