Procedure for recommending a student laptop requirement for an academic program

Overview

This article provides an overview of the process deans and department heads should adhere to when pursuing a student laptop requirement for an academic program.

Description

1. Programs wishing to implement a student laptop requirement must submit a proposal to the Curriculum Committee that documents the appropriate specifications to be included in the Special Equipment Needs section of the College Catalog. The proposal must be submitted to the committee no later than mid-January of the year in which the program would like to implement the requirement for new students, For example, a laptop requirement for new students in Fall 2023 must be submitted to the Curriculum Committee no later than mid-January 2023.
2. Before submitting the proposal, the program should review the hardware and software needs with ITS by submitting a request for consultation
   1. ITS will return a specification intended to support the most demanding software requirements of the program for the duration of an average student’s academic career.
   2. ITS will return recommendations for software delivery to students where the program has course-specific software restricted by licensing.
3. Once the Curriculum Committee has approved the laptop requirement for the program, the Dean of Curriculum & Instruction will inform ITS that the request has been approved.
4. ITS will work with our established vendors to post a device matching the specifications approved by the committee on a purchasing portal available to students.
5. After the proposal has been approved, the program should work with PRM to update any information contained on the marketing webpage found in the Program Finder and any other marketing materials.
