Distance Learning Seat Restrictions and P.L.A.T.O.

Summary

This article explains how seat restrictions are handled in Anthology and subsequently, how corresponding P.L.A.T.O. course sites are created.

Body

During class scheduling periods, it is sometimes necessary to restrict a certain number of class seats for distance learning majors. With Anthology, this is achieved by creating class 'sections' for each restricted block of seats.

As an example, CSC124 generally runs two distance learning sections each semester, sections -90 and -91. When adding a 'restricted section' for each, we end up with the following:

  • CSC124-90A (Unrestricted - open to any major)
  • CSC124-90B (Restricted - open to only online major codes)

In the above scenario, when P.L.A.T.O. course sites are created, the system will create a site for each: CSC124-90A and CSC124-90B. Pictured below, are the two Restricted sections.

CSC124 Restricted Sections in P.L.A.T.O.

It is likely that you will want to begin working on your P.L.A.T.O. sites when they become available. If you plan to merge all or some of the sections of the same course, it is recommended that you work in the "A" section. Additionally, if you may merge the course with another class section (i.e., section 90), it's recommended that you work in the lowest section (90, not 91). Closer to the semester start date, the Registrar's Office will lift the seat restrictions and this will result in your official course sites being created. In the above scenario, it would be CSC124-90.

With the official course sites created, you can now request the merge and copy the content from the previous site you were working in using the Import / Export / Copy Components function in the source course. In the above scenario, this would be CSC124-90.
